Collepino

... the ideal place ...

Located on the southeast side of Mount Subasio, at 600 meters above sea level, the Castle of Collepino, anciently known as Colle-Lupino, represents a true hidden gem in the heart of Umbria. Built from Subasio stone, white and pink, this small medieval castle dates back to the 13th century and was initially inhabited by shepherds and woodcutters who worked near the Abbey of San Silvestro. Over the centuries, the castle has witnessed numerous historical events, including conflicts, periods of prosperity, and moments of decline. One of its most fascinating features is its close connection with the Abbey of San Silvestro, founded by Saint Benedict in 523 and transformed into a Camaldolese monastery in 1025. The abbey, located just two kilometers from Collepino, represents not only the origin of the village but also the hub of its history. Although much of the abbey is in ruins, some parts have been expertly restored just over 50 years ago by Mother Teresa of the Eucharist and her Little Sisters of Mary who guard the Abbey, now called the Hermitage of the Transfiguration, and the Silence that inhabits and surrounds it. It is not a tourist place, but pilgrims who wish to experience prayer and meditation will be welcomed with joy.

In addition to its historical heritage, the Castle of Collepino offers a charming atmosphere thanks to its narrow paved streets and restored homes that retain their original appearance. The castle is in excellent condition, and some of the old garrison residences have been transformed into private homes. About 7 km away from Spello (10 minutes by car), it is permanently inhabited by about 25-30 people, a number that significantly increases in the summer due to the cool and pleasant climate. A wine bar (La Locanda) and a restaurant (La Taverna di San Silvestro) open all year round are points of reference for lovers of the area, tourists, and the many sports enthusiasts who increasingly see Collepino as a mid-point among the endless paths, tracks, and trails of Subasio. The small Church with Sunday Mass, the Cultural Circle of San Silvestro, and the many friends of this "magical" village keep the traditions alive with very participatory community events.
